The traditional mountain dulcimer is a modal instrument. This workshop demonstrates all seven modes using tunes and songs from Appalachia and England. In addition, Jenny Conlee of the alt folk rock band The Decemberists, has given permission to Lance to teach a couple of her lovely original compositions which explore modes. Students will learn to use both a capo and retuning the melody string(s) in order to play in the different modes.
