Chris Steiner
In 1997, a simple newspaper ad changed everything for Chris Steiner:
“Learn to play 10 songs on the dulcimer in 2 hours. Keep the dulcimer. $35.”
What started as a curiosity quickly turned into a calling. That first instrument—a humble cardboard mountain dulcimer—was just the beginning. Within two weeks, Chris was already performing at county fairs and local nursing homes, sharing music and discovering the joy of connecting with audiences.
Then came the moment that sealed her fate: her first encounter with the hammered dulcimer. It was love at first listen. Immersing herself in workshops and festivals like the Buckeye Dulcimer Festival and Evart Dulcimer Festival, Chris built not only her skills, but her confidence—and a passion for passing it on. Having never touched a stringed instrument until her 40s, she now proudly proves that it’s never too late to start something extraordinary. In fact, she thrives on teaching “old dogs new tricks!”
Today, Chris is a sought-after instructor and performer, offering private lessons, leading workshops and jams, and appearing at festivals across the Midwest. She has been a beloved staff member at the Buckeye Dulcimer Festival for over 20 years, helped co-direct in-school music programs, and has led teacher workshops for “Bluegrass in the Schools” in partnership with the International Bluegrass Music Association in Nashville, TN. Alongside her husband Joe, she also helps run a large, twice-yearly bluegrass festival in Indiana—now celebrating its 50th year.
Chris (Cooperrider) Steiner is one-half of Chris and Joe – Old Time Duo (the “better half,” if you ask her!). While the hammered dulcimer is her signature instrument, she’s equally at home on upright bass when the moment calls for it. She is also a member of Buckeye RoadShow, a trio with Joe Steiner and Shari Wolf, dedicated not only to performing, but to keeping old-time music alive through shared tunes, skills, and community.
