Plainchant (plainsong) is the beautiful, unaccompanied, contemplative style of chanting that originated in the third century A.D. and become a central tradition of the western Christian church during the ninth - tenth centuries. Surprisingly (or not?), this meditative music works well on mountain dulcimer, played either with drones or simple chords. These beautiful ancient tunes also provide an excellent opportunity for developing a smooth, connected playing style.
